Sciatica is the name given to any sort of pain that is caused by irritation or compression of the Sciatic Nerve. The pain can range from a very mild dull ache to serve pain causing the sufferer to be completely immobile. Your Sciatic Nerve is the longest nerve in your body and runs from the base of your spine through your buttocks and all the way down both legs, ending at your feet. Damage to a disc in the spine causing the disc to change shape and press on the sciatic nerve is the most common cause of sciatica. If you suffer from Sciatica you may find some days are more painful than others and it is important to stay within your limitations with your daily activities and exercise. Most cases of Sciatica feel better within 8 weeks although some can last much longer.
Gentle exercise and stretching is fantastic for sciatic sufferers as it allows the disc to remain mobile not only helping with the pain relief but also helping to shorten the recovery period. Prevention of sciatica (especially reoccurring sciatica) can be achieved by a few simple steps:
Good Posture – this is the best defense against sciatica. Good posture will help you minimize the squashing of discs that will inevitably press on the sciatic nerve. Each and every one of my classes will teach you good posture and you will find that you will automatically start to apply what you learn in your class throughout your day very quickly therefore improving your posture and risk of sciatica.
Strengthening Core Muscles – strengthening your core, abdominal and back muscles are key to keeping sciatica at bay. Each one of our classes is focused on core and back strength.
Exercise – (and I don’t mean pounding the pavements, high impact exercise or lifting weights, so don’t worry), but gentle exercise and stretching will keep you supple and your spine safe. My Pilates classes will help reduce the deterioration of discs which means they are less likely to cause sciatic pain.
Most of us have suffered from sciatica at some point in our lives and it can recover quickly or be ongoing and be very painful. But simple things such as good posture and back strength can make a huge difference in the prevention and treatment of sciatica so why not come and see how we can help you in one of our classes.
